To discuss a campaign in which you felt an ethical theory has been violated.

Marketing Campaign Ethics – Calvin Klein

Introduction


Calvin Klein (CK) is a fashion brand synonymous with the culture of rebellion and sex. Search for Calvin Klein ads on the Internet and you will know what I mean. From the very beginning, its founder, Calvin Klein, has always believed in the power of shock advertising. Shock advertising is advertising that attracts attention by being startling or offending in some manner. This is achieved through the use of explicit, violent or highly graphic images, or suggestive television advertisements.

Shock advertising works on the social norm of the consumer it targets. It goes against their values, beliefs and morals, getting them to think, talk and act on that advertisement. Shock advertising can be very effective for a company, or horrendously damaging.


The Advertisement

The focus of my assignment is the Calvin Klein Jeanswear (CK Jeans) advertising campaign, launched in the year 1995 via television, print and billboard medium. The print advertisement features a topless male model and a female model with exposed underwear from her low cut jeans in a dingy setting. The shock factor was how nubile and young they both looked – he looked like a prepubescent teen, and she seemed not a day older than 14! The ad campaign was inspired by Italian pornography of the 1960s, says Klein in an interview.

If the print advertisement roused the viewer's suspicion that CK was propagating inappropriate sexual innuendo, the advertisements on television confirms that suspicion. In it, a man (presumably a director) films a few young auditionees with a handheld camera. Most of these auditionees were in their early teens. The camera pans to their fresh faces, parts of their bodies, and captures an atmosphere of uneasiness.

The man behind the camera asks them suggestive questions, talks about the clothes they are wearing, and in one scene, encouraged a boy to rip his shirt off. Even a bystander would notice that something was something wrong and disturbing with the scene! Why is that elderly film director hitting on the young boy? Should he not be in school? And what sort of an audition was this?


The Ethical Theory

The ethical theory that has been violated in this situation is the duty-based theory. To judge whether an action is ethical or not by the duty based theory, each action must be judged independently. This means not taking into account the results that may occur from that action or its possible consequences. The motivation of an act is what makes it ethical or unethical.

So, the question that must be asked is: what is the motivation (or the main intention) for CK’s ad campaign? The obvious answer would be, to gain market share of jeans in the fashion industry. That sounds like a fair and reasonable business-minded motivation. But what was their drive, or what spurred them to go ahead with such a suggestive and almost risqué ad campaign? The answer: to create shock; to connote jeans with sex; to get people to talk about it. It certainly is not unethical, but it is an unclassy way to market their denim. However, to answer the question accurately, we must mention the execution of the shock advertisement: using models who look barely of age, accompanied by the voiceover of an elderly male laced with sexual innuendo.

Kantian categorical imperatives that should have been followed include universality, i.e. acting on principles that are universal. CK did not follow universal principles of protecting minors and their rights. It blatantly exploited the image of pre-teens by using nubile-looking models and subjecting them to intense and inappropriate scrutiny. Duty based theory also says to never treat people as a means to an end. This means to treat each person with respect in regards to their humanity. The manner in which the models were treated in the advertisement was condescending, exploitative and offensive to most people.


Impact and Rectification

CK’s ad campaign did not go down well with the general public. Although it was the 90s, when low cut jeans and bare midriffs started cropping up to suggest a more open and “fun” lifestyle, the public had zero tolerance for the preying upon of young teens and children.

The advertisement, both television and print, was found to be exploitative and disturbing by various parties. The American Family Association began campaigning via letters to retailers to boycott CK apparel. Among the biggest retailers who supported the boycott was Dayton Hudson Corporation (now known as Target). Besides that, CK was facing difficulties in getting print adverts out, as magazines like Seventeen refused to run that advertisement. The biggest reaction was probably the probe into CK by the Justice Department of the United States to find out whether any child pornography law was broken. (It was dropped, as all of the models were adults)

What CK can do to rectify this situation was to pull the ad campaign from the market, which they did due to public pressure, almost four months after its launch. To put this into the context of the duty based theory, CK should take more responsibility in playing its role as a member of a moral community, where people are treated as an end, and not just the means to an end. This means, to stop using and exploiting young models for the sake of market share.


No Repeat

Ethical marketing says that this is a marketing strategy that should not be repeated by CK in the future – but that is not going to stop them from doing it. As I mentioned earlier, shock advertising can work both ways. It can be very effective (as in the case of using graphic images of mouth cancer and the likes to discourage smoking) or horrendously damaging (intense public backlash). The CK ad campaign discussed in this assignment hauled in $462 million in apparel sales and another $200 million in unfulfilled orders in 1995 alone. Though heavily criticized and short-lived, the ad campaign for CK Jeans accomplished all and more of what it was supposed to do. It created much revenue for the company and ingrained into the minds of consumers that “jeans are all about sex,”

The $200 million in unfulfilled orders is probably the catalyst for another short-lived campaign in 1999, in which CK promoted its children’s underwear line with high definition, black and white images of children jumping on a couch clad only in their underwear. The billboard was up for only one day and the public’s furor over it was worse than previously, because CK had used children in this advertisement.

CK has not done anything to ensure that this does not occur again. In fact, in recent years as well, its advertisements have come into the spotlight for all the wrong reasons.


Conclusion

Sex sells – we all know that. Controversy sells, too. For CK to change its style of doing business is like asking a tiger to change its stripes. Sex, nudity, shock and rebellion are ingrained in the CK culture. To change their ethics or the way they view ethics is to move away from its foundation and change its entire identity.

The problem with this company’s view of things is that they do not put ethics first. Neither do they think about moral consequences or the impact their shocking advertisements have on the society at large. Not only do they not base their decisions on duty based theories (or other ethical theories for that matter), but they also lack a respectable image of virtue. Some may argue that their rebellion and sex-oriented image is what differentiates them from other apparel companies, but to what extent are they doing it, and at whose cost?

double bill



Yes, yes I must sleep soon! Just wanted to blog about an outing last Saturday.

Double Bill here is a term used when a choreographer produces two different, independent performances. The first one of the evening, WG-Spiel (a German term) ran for 50 minutes. It was about the chemistry and attachment of three different housemates, and started off with a bang! ie techno music as soundtrack to a tight (choreographed) fighting scene. On a whole, I enjoyed WG-Spiel very much. Perhaps due to the music, too-by one DJ Trip/Clark/Ellen Alien. Besides that, the storyline was easy to see and they were doing pretty much regular everyday stuff. I don't get the symbolism of the white crates, though.



Poetic Structure, man, I do NOT get it at all. I saw the emotive faces evolving with the hands, the "ha ha ha" but other than that, no, what was the neon lights for? A house shape, that was all I saw. The dancers (all local) were good.


Interesting night out! Also got to spot (with the help of Tcher Pen, of course) a few dance people :D

It's nearing my bedtime.

You know how they always say we love Facebook because it gives us an opportunity to reinvent ourselves as the people we'd like other people to view us as, and how we do it by selectively choosing what we're tagged in and what we share, be it notes, links or videos? To me, it's like a culmination of what the tech buzz has been. If you had a second chance at life, that's probably how you'd build it. With the prettiest profile picture. The most decent pictures to be tagged in. Only sharing the music you think is cool. Giving your two cents on matters and politics you want others to think you're interested in. Sharing your true emotions behind a curtain of pixels. Living the life you want to live.

But really...waking up to log in to Facebook, logging off Facebook to sleep? Is that what we're being boiled down to? It is scary.


I HAVE to stop using Facebook.

little bows

So...I've passed a few of these small, pink-ish bows to some of my girlfriends. (Not the big one. Nobody would wear that in public!)





I love Su Mei's reaction when she examined one in her hand ("Waaah, really ah? You make one? Don't bluff lah Aisha!"). And I love it more to see the girls wearing them! :D

The bows are a handicraft, inspired by a bland college class one day. I went home and started on a prototype, which went to Su Ling just before she left for Aussie.

The other day at the bazaar, Yin Xian saw this awesome fabrics booth (Fabrics Fanatic). We all clamored over, even Amanda, who doesn't do stitching! Haha.

There was a matryoshka printed one that I absolutely love, so I had to get that. Just a small piece, can't make much with it. And I bought a bundle of polka dots too. So cute!

Since today is my "off" day of the week (superbly busy when weekends roll around), I took the liberty to try it out. Check it!

In the three weeks I've worked, today is the second public holiday I've encountered? I love Malaysia for its many public holidays. LOL.


Did you know Aidiladha is celebrated in remembrance of Abraham's faithfulness to the Lord that led him to (almost!) sacrifice his son, Isaac?

The story goes that God told Abraham to bring Isaac as a burnt sacrifice to him on Moriah mountain. As they walked up that mountain, Isaac, who was carrying the kindle (for the fire) asked his dad, "Dad, we have the wood and the fire. But where is the lamb for the offering?" In reply, Abraham said "God will provide it, son."

So they reached the top, built the altar, and Isaac was bound and put on it. (say it with me: WHAATTTT) As Abraham lifted the knife to his only son, an angel called out to stop him, telling him not to harm the boy. He looked up and saw a ram with its horns stuck in a bush, so voila, the burnt offering is provided!

There is lots to learn here, like Abraham's faith and willingness to follow God's voice, how Isaac must have felt, etc. But the only thing I thought of today, as I saw the news of cows being slaughtered in mosques and all, is the One sacrifice to atone all sin of humankind.

(I don't know why I'm reading Picoult. I swore off her stuff years ago after The Pact, which was emotionally distressing and mentally draining, and totally suicidal. I thought her stuff is all emo crap. Until Keeping Faith, an engrossing read!)

4. Rachel's messy peach crumble pairs so well with the icy cold Baskin Robbins.


5. Shake ups and break ups! This has been, without a doubt, the busiest year end I've had. Too much Distance Education workload, coupled with the inane work hours mean time is pressed, and the need to procrastinate grows.



6. Observation : As people grow older, they grow more critical and more bitter.


7. There was something here but I deleted it!


8. Joyce has this confrontational streak in her that I never knew existed. That's something I would like to have too. Makes everything so much more easier. No more beating around the bush and all.


9. The media is telling much lies and little truth. The Star newspaper is owned by MCA. It is pro-Barisan and anti-Pakatan. Take my word for it, if you're reading The Star, you'll never read of a Pakatan conference happening, unless a fight broke out. But when an UMNO meeting comes around, hoho, that's all you'll be seeing.

All I'm saying is, when it comes to the mainstream (or alternative, for that matter) take it with a pinch of salt, and don't believe all that it says.

surreal

Yesterday was a day in which everything was magnified. The train passed by a very small plot of recently bulldozed land, the red mud on which nothing stands but a medium built orange building with chipped paint. Four stories high, all the wide windows had no glass, so when the train shoots pass the structure, you could see the sky and the clouds through the building.

It was just for a split second that I saw it, but there and then, there was a strange feeling tied to that moment. Something melancholic-not overtly sad, but subtle and lonely enough to warrant your attention. Something like your childhood, and your favorite item at the playground (swing set), or an emotional Japanese movie.

Then I could see the blueness of the sky become even more blue. The clouds moving at a fast pace. The scenery changing. Everything was magnified. It was like the sights became crystal clear on that train trip. Surreal, I thought!

"Let Me take care of you,"

Train rides are therapeutic. Especially you take one in the middle of the afternoon. It's good to rearrange one's thoughts and priorities on the train. Nobody to talk to, nobody to listen to. Plenty of time to pray. Muddles. All that.

Reaching my station, the rain was pounding moderately on the roof and glass. There was no escape to this rain-I would have to be late for work. I prayed in my heart, not for the rain to stop, but that I would reach work on time.

There really is nothing to do but to wait.
You can't stop the rain.
You can't create an umbrella on the spot.
You just wait.
You seeked His kingdom and righteousness, you asked with a pure heart, so you wait.
He will take care of you.

For all of 5 minutes as I reached the station, a book kept me entertained. Then, the air cleared. The rain's gone! Well, most of it. Still, it was light enough to walk under. It was so beautiful. The weather. The puddles were not puddly. The drizzle was not heavy. Just like how one expects it to be after a storm, that was it. Crystal clear, once again.

I reached work on time that day.

We were pretty late into the event. Got in just in time to catch a wee bit of Mizz Nina singing her one hit wonder, lots of a DJ Johan and a sneak of half of Lapsap. Yes, it was mediocre. Cos last year TGIF provided the food! Hahaha.

Afterwards, me and Na (tried to) drive to Pavilion. Cos MIFW'10 is on there, and Bernard Chandran was due to show his latest collection too. We didn't lah. Heh.
